ABOUT 200 ATHLETES ARE FIGHTING FOR MEDALS OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP OF RUSSIA ON PARA POWERLIFTING AMONG PERSONS WITH PHYSICAL IMPAIRMENT

The Russian National Para Powerlifting Championship among persons with physical impairment is taking place in Suzdal, Vladimir Region.

Competitions take place in art-hotel “Nikolaevskiy Posad” from 10th to 15th of February.

The opening ceremony was held on February 11 at 15:00, the competition days are from 11 to 14 of February.

Preliminary entries for participation were submitted by 200 athletes from 33 regions of Russia.

Medals will be taken in 10 weight categories and in team competition among men and women.

Powerlifting sport among persons with physical impairment was first introduced at the Paralympic Games in 1964 in Tokyo under the name of "weightlifting". Then, in 1992, it was decided to rename it to the “powerlifting”. Initially, the Paralympic Games were attended only by men, but at the Paralympic Games 2000 in Sydney for the first time women participated in competitions. In this sport, athletes demonstrate the power of the upper body and can sometimes be seen when the athlete lifts the weight of the barbell, exceeding 3-4 times their own body weight.
