Pavel Rozhkov, Chairman of the Executive Board, First Vice-President of the Russian Paralympic Committee, Chief of Mission of the Russian National Team at the Tokyo Paralympic Games, spoke on the agenda of the preparation of sports teams of the Russian Federation for the XVI Paralympic Summer Games in Tokyo (Japan).

“At present, the participation of the Russian Paralympic Team in the XVI Paralympic Summer Games in Tokyo depends on the development of events related to the global COVID-19 pandemic in the whole world, Russia and Japan, as well as the legal process between WADA and RUSADA.

On March 30, 2020, for the first time in history, it was decided to postpone the XVI Paralympic Summer Games 2020 to August 24 - September 5, 2021.

The name of the Games will remain the same "Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020".

The sports program will be identical to the one planned before the postponement: 539 sets of medals in 22 sports.

The Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee has confirmed that the Games will be held at the planned sports venues.

In order to reduce the costs of organizing the Games, the Games Organizing Committee decided to optimize all funding items.

The webinar for the Chiefs of the Mission will take place on October 26.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 200 international competitions have been canceled or postponed since the end of February 2020, including qualifiers for the Tokyo Games.

Eligibility criteria for all 22 sports have been updated to reflect the new dates of the Games.

The IPC is developing a plan in case none of the scheduled qualifying events can take place due to a pandemic.

It is important that all quotas won by athletes prior to the change in the qualification criteria remain valid.

So far, Russian athletes have won 136 quotas for participation in Paralympic Games 2020, which corresponds to 174 athletes in 13 sports. It is planned that Russian athletes will take part in 19 out of 22 sports. The composition of the Russian Paralympic delegation at Paralympic Games 2020 can be up to 470 people, including up to 270 athletes.

At present, all National Teams in Paralympic sports have resumed training in Russia.

Taking into account compliance with the requirements of Rosportrebnadzor, Federal Medical – Biological Agency of Russia and the Ministry of Sports, 8 Russian championships have been held since August 2020 (cycling, track, rowing and canoeing, archery, triathlon, athletics). On September 20, the Russian Championship among PI Athletes in the marathon was held in Luzhniki as part of the Moscow Marathon - 2020.
