22 June 2021
The Para Triathlon World Cup took place in Spain on June 20.

The competition became the final qualifying start for the Russian National Para Triathlon team for the XVI Paralympic Summer Games in Tokyo.

The Russian National Team won 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals at the end of the competition.

Mikhail Astashov (Sverdlovsk region / Republic of Buryatia) won the competition among athletes of the PTS2 class.

Evgeniya Koroleva (Kurgan region / Sverdlovsk region) won silver in PTS3 class.

Bronze medals of the competition were won by representatives of the city of Moscow Semyon Radaev in the PTWC class and Veronika Gabitova in the PTS2 class.

Among athletes with visual impairments, Ksenia Vybornykh and Alena Zubova (Moscow) showed the 5th result, Lyudmila Taranskaya and Olga Dmitrieva (Chelyabinsk region) finished in 7th place.

Representatives of the Tyumen region Alexander Yalchik and Denis Kungurtsev finished 7th in the PTS4 and PTS5 classes, respectively.

Alexander Konyshev (Krasnoyarsk Territory) finished 8th in PTS5.

Marina Nikitina, senior coach of the Russian National Para Triathlon team for the sport of persons with physical impairments:

“The past World Cup in Spain became a serious test for all para-athletes. While Moscow was languishing in the heat, in Coruña the temperature of both air and water was only 15 degrees. A strong wind was blowing, it was raining, there were puddles on the asphalt. The winner of the race, Mikhail Astashov, had prostheses slipping on the wet road, and he could barely hold back so as not to fall.

Our athletes coped with all the difficulties with dignity and not only won 4 medals - 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze, but also took 3rd place in the medal standings among athletes with PAD. The Spaniards won with 3 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze medals. The UK team is in second place - 2 gold and 1 bronze medals.

The World Cup in Spain ended for us the qualification for the Paralympic Games in Tokyo, although there is one more start in the international calendar - the Continental American Championship, which will be held on June 27.

The international Paralympic ranking, which will be used to qualify for the Games, will be finally updated on 28 June.

The 9 strongest athletes in each of the 8 disciplines will receive quotas for participation in the Games. Men and women with visual impairments (PTVI), seated (PTWC) and PTS5 will compete for medals, as well as medals in the PTS4 class for men and PTS2 for women. "
