The Head Coach of the Russian national triathlon team Marina Nikitina notes:
“More than 5000 elite athletes from 46 countries are going to participate in the Grand final of the Worlds Championship in the beautiful city of Gold Coast in Australia. This is the most prestigious start of the sports season in triathlon.
In the starting list of the World Championship 2018 are included six of our athletes that gained the necessary rating points and met the international qualification criteria. Without no doubt this is a progress. At the last year’s championship, only 4 Russian athletes got the right to participate at the competitions.
Overall, 110 athletes (100 of them due to classification criteria and 10 of them with personal invitations) are participating at the World championships.
The selection for the Summer Paralympics has not started yet, and for that reason, our main goal is to gain rating points that will further obtain the participation of our athletes in in qualifying competitions for the Paralympic games.
Our athletes in general completed their training plans and are in a good physical shape for the championship. I hope that they will be able to improve their performance compared to the last year”.
Paratriathlon was included for the first time in the program of the Paralympic Games 2016 in Rio De Janeiro (Brazil). This kind of sport includes competitions in three events: 750 m swimming, 20 km racing of bikes and 5 km running. The athletes compete for medals in 6 different classes depending on the level of the impairment: sitting (class PTWC), standing (classes PTS2, PTS 3, PTS 4, PTS 5), and the athletes with visual impairments are competing in the class PTVI. In the bicycle racing the athletes can use handbikes for the sitting category and bicycles for the standing category. Furthermore, in the running competition, the sitting athletes are participating in wheelchairs, the standing ones are using their prosthesis. In the 2020 Paralympics are going to be played 8 sets of medals in paratriathlon.
