In exactly one year, for the first time in the history of canoes and kayaks, it will be possible to win both the Olympics and a world title in the same year when the ICF canoe sprint world championships take place in Denmark.
It's a highlight in a big year for the Danish Canoe and Kayak Association, who will celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2021.
The 2021 ICF Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe World Championships will take place a few weeks after the postponed Olympic Games. It will be an historic opportunity to win medals at the Olympics and the world championships in the same year.
“We're very excited to be hosting the ICF canoe sprint and Paracanoe world championships in 2021," President of the Danish Canoe Federation, Tom Faurschou, said.
"This gives us an amazing opportunity to celebrate our 100th anniversary and to promote the sport within Denmark as well as Denmark within the world of international canoe. The event embraces the Danish elite from our past, to our present, and into the future.”
The preparations are well underway, the main lines have been laid out and the work on the many 100 year details has begun. The financial event partners are looking forward to the remaining part of the planning, and not least the event's hosting.
"Covid-19 has changed the event scene dramatically, including the fact that the UEFA EURO 2020 has been rescheduled to 2021," Lars Lundov, CEO of Sport Event Denmark, said.
"The ICF canoe sprint and paracanoe world championships have only changed the date by a few weeks and will be one of the year's absolute highlights. We are looking forward to great sporting experiences once again in Denmark."
Sport Event Denmark is the main financial partner together with the City of Copenhagen, the City of Gladsaxe, the City of Lyngby-Taarbæk, and the Capital Region.
The 2021 ICF canoe sprint and paracanoe world championships will be staged at Lake Bagsværd from September 14-19, 2021, by the Danish Canoe Federation for the International Canoe Federation, in collaboration with financial partners, the City of Copenhagen, the City of Gladsaxe, the City of Lyngby-Taarbæk, the Capital Region, and Sport Event Denmark.
