A message from European Paralympic Committee Ratko Kovacic on postponed Paralympic Games

25 March 2020
Dear Members of the EPC, dear Friends of the Paralympic Movement,

According to the joint statement of the International Olympic Committee and the Tokyo Organising Committee released today, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games are postponed for 2021.

The EPC fully welcomes this decision, that was not taken lightly and was done in the best interest of athletes, their support teams and the millions of spectators that were due to attend the Games.

The most important thing in this difficult time is to perserve the health and human lives. All of us have the responsibility toward each human being to support all the measures and stop further spreading of the COVID-19 virus that is affecting our lives, global economy and sport.

The Games will be held at a date beyond 2020 but no later than the summer of 2021. By making this decision, everyone involved in the Paralympic Movement, including all athletes, can now fully focus on their health and the well-being of the entire society. So, please inform your athletes to stay safe and protect their health at all costs.

When all countries gather in Tokyo next year, they will unite as one for sports, just as they are doing now to defeat the pandemic.

In the meantime, I hope that you stay safe together with your friends and families during this tough time for the whole world and I encourage you to stay positive.

Stay healthy, yours sincerely,
Ratko Kovačić
EPC President
